Waziri Phoebe Mutemi for Gender, Youth, and Sports, has urged parents to take a leading role in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in remote areas of Kitui County. Speaking on Saturday, March 8th, during the International Women’s Day celebrations at Miambani Comprehensive School in Kitui Central, she emphasized the importance of parents reporting GBV cases to the relevant authorities whenever they occur. Mutemi noted that by being proactive, parents can help create a safer environment for their children, particularly young girls who are often the most vulnerable. She stressed that protecting children from violence and abuse is a shared responsibility that requires vigilance and community involvement.

Speaking at the same event, which was themed “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality.”, Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe reaffirmed his government’s commitment to promoting policies that advance the well-being of women and girls. He stated that true empowerment begins with access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Governor Malombe highlighted key initiatives his administration is implementing to support women, such as strengthening women’s leadership and decision-making, improving employment opportunities, empowering women entrepreneurs through the Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO) initiative, and supporting women farmers with climate-smart agriculture.

Additionally, Governor Malombe announced the establishment of a GBV rescue center at Ikutha Level 4 Hospital, which will provide a safe space for survivors of gender-based violence and offer them the necessary support services. He also emphasized the importance of improving maternal and newborn healthcare, empowering persons with disabilities, and ensuring that women have access to clean water. His administration is committed to addressing challenges that hinder women’s progress by implementing policies that create a more inclusive and supportive environment for them.

The CECM also used the platform to encourage parents to instill strong moral values in their children, particularly young girls, as they are the leaders of tomorrow. She stressed that raising disciplined and responsible children will contribute to building a safer and more equitable society. Governor Malombe echoed this message, urging young girls to dream big and work hard to achieve their goals. He called on women to support each other and claim their rightful space in leadership, business, and all sectors of life.

Waziri Phoebe praised the resilience and strength of women, describing them as special beings capable of balancing multiple responsibilities. She noted that women not only bear children but also take on physically demanding tasks such as fetching water while managing household and economic responsibilities. Her remarks underscored the need to appreciate and support women in all aspects of life. She encouraged the community to work together in empowering women and girls, ensuring they have equal opportunities to succeed and thrive.
