Waziri Ruth Koki, the Kitui County CECM for Health, recently visited the Kyatune Health Center in response to a concerning incident alleging a mother gave birth outside the facility. Fortunately, both the mother and her newborn are in good health, thanks to the prompt intervention of community members and subsequent care provided by the health center. Koki remarked, “This incident highlights the critical importance of accessible healthcare in rural areas, where timely medical attention can make a significant difference in maternal and child health outcomes.”
During her visit, CECM Koki was accompanied by key health officials, including Chief Officer Dr. Benson Musyoka and Director of Medical Services Francis Musyoka. The team aimed to assess the challenges faced by health facilities in remote areas and strategize effective solutions. CECM Koki expressed her relief that both mother and child were safe, stating, “We must address staffing shortages and improve accessibility to healthcare services in facilities like Kyatune Health Center to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
Koki’s remarks underscored a broader commitment by the Kitui County government to strengthen the healthcare system, particularly in underserved regions. “This situation underscores the importance of strengthening our healthcare system,” she stated, recognizing the unique challenges that rural residents face in accessing timely care. Her focus on innovative strategies to ensure that no mother or child is left unattended reflects a compassionate and responsive approach to health governance.
The visit also facilitated important discussions with local leaders, including the health center chairman and area chief. These conversations aimed to gather insights on the community’s specific needs and expectations regarding healthcare services. Koki emphasized the importance of community input, saying, “Engaging with local stakeholders is crucial for understanding the barriers to accessing care and for developing tailored solutions that meet the unique circumstances of rural populations.”
Looking ahead, the Kitui County health department plans to prioritize the establishment of 24/7 medical services, especially in maternal and child healthcare. Under the leadership of Governor Malombe, the department is committed to exploring various measures to improve healthcare delivery, including adjustments to staffing and increased support for remote health centers. Dr. Benson Musyoka echoed this commitment, stating, “We are determined to ensure that our healthcare system can respond effectively to the needs of our communities, especially in times of emergency.” The proactive stance taken by CECM Ruth Koki and her team is a promising step toward enhancing health outcomes in Kitui County and ensuring that all residents have access to the care they need.
