The political storm rocking the Kitui County Assembly has seen 11 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) for 90 calendar days over what is termed as “grave disorderly conduct” a biggest purge of its kind in the county’s history. While the Assembly leadership has linked the suspensions to the chaos that marred Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s State of the County Address on July 8, 2025, causing scuffles inside the chambers and violating Standing Order No. 103A(1)(f). it’s now believed that the move is less about discipline and more about political survival and the silencing of Wiper loyalists.
Among those shown the door are some of the most outspoken and influential figures in Kitui politics. Hon. Munyoki Mwinzi (Kyuso Ward). He was joined by Hon. Daniel Ngoima (Kitui Township) and Hon. Dr. Erastus Mbuno (Endau Malalani Ward), who served as Deputy Majority Leader.
Another high-profile victim is Hon. Cyrus Musyoka “Sonko” (Ikanga Kyatune Ward). Hon. Mathew Ngovi Vuthi (Chuluni) and Hon. Hussein Mwandia (Ikutha) both members of the County Assembly Service Board were suspended for leaking sensitive internal information to the media in violation of the County Assemblies Services Act, 2017. The Speaker further accused Vuthi of hurling abusive language at the Chair, conduct he said amounted to contempt of the Assembly.
The purge also swept through the nominated MCAs, with Hon. Mercy Mulewa Muema, Hon. Mary Ndumbu, Hon. Jacinta Mwoni, and Hon. Mary Mutune all suspended. For the Wiper Party, the removal of four nominated members in one swoop is seen as a direct attack on the party’s backbone in the Assembly.
Information reaching out desk is that Hon. Jacinta Mary Mwoni (Nominated MCA) was singled out for misconduct during a public event convened by Governor Dr. Julius Malombe in Nguni Ward on September 27, 2025. Mwoni allegedly demeaned the Office of the Speaker and struck Hon. Jeremiah Musee Mutua (Nguni MCA and Deputy Minority Leader) in full view of the public an incident Kinengo cited as proof of her lack of decorum.
Perhaps the most politically loaded suspension was that of Hon. Sylvester Munyalo Kitheka “Yaamu” (Matinyani Ward), the Minority Whip and the man behind the impeachment motion against Speaker Kevin Kinengo. His inclusion in the list fuels claims that the suspensions were engineered to kill the impeachment motion by removing its architect from the floor of the House.
Speaker Kinengo defended the suspensions, insisting that discipline and respect for Assembly rules are non-negotiable. “The conduct of the suspended members gravely undermined the dignity of this House,” he declared. He further referred the matter to the County Assembly Powers and Privileges Committee for additional inquiry, signaling that more sanctions could follow..
With 9 out of the 11 suspended MCAs tied to Wiper, the mass expulsion has raised serious questions about political neutrality within the Assembly. Coming barely two days after Speaker Kinengo withdrew from the Wiper Patriotic Front’s NEC, the suspensions are being widely described as a calculated strike to weaken Kalonzo’s party machinery inside Kitui.
