The Kitui County government is undertaking a raft of safety measures during this rains season, the Deputy County Governor Augustine Wambua Kanani has said. “We as a county are making and taking all the measures to ensure that the floods are not going to affect us in the county,” he added.
We know that the county is blessed with so many rivers and the floods cause a lot of dangers in the county during the rains seasons, Kanani said. The DG was speaking when he officially launched the public sensitisation on the safety measures to be taken in the county during this rains season. The event took place at the Kalundu Market in Kitui Town where he was representing Governor Julius Makau Malombe as the chief guest at the function.
During the function, Kanani led the unblocking of the drainages within the Kitui Town to avoid floods. The event had been organised by the county government in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross Society. “Disaster and emergency services. Clean sewage to avoid floods” was the theme of the event.
“The Kenya Meteorology Department has been telling us that the current rains in the country will be extremely too much and it has just began in the country,” Kanani said. “We as a county must take measures in our county to avoid the floods dangers,” he went on.
We in the county are prepared not to be affected by the floods like what happened during the 1997 and 2006 floods rains, he said. And he warned the locals over crossing the flooded rivers there “for the floods are dangerous.” He advised the locals to avoid dumping the waste in the county’s towns and markets where he asked them to maintain cleanliness for the good of the public health.
“Please put the dirt where it is supposed to be for the good of the cleanliness of our towns and markets,” Kanani said. He talked about the mosquitoes and bilharzia that he said are common during the rains seasons. He asked the residents not to litter the drainages.
The DG asked those who are constructing buildings there not to tamper with the places where the drainages are constructed. “The deed is not good. Please stop it,” he said, adding that the water must find its way if the drainages-blocking is done. “I wish to thank the Kenya Red Cross Society for ensuring that this exercise is a success.
They are partnering with us so that our people can know the dangers that are ahead of us,” Kanani said. He was accompanied by the county ministers Fredrick Kimanga (Lands, Housing and Urban Development) and Engineer Reuben Mulwa Itiko (Roads, Transport and Public Works) who also addressed the occasion.
The Kitui Town Municipality Manager Job Muisyo, the Kenya Red Cross Society Team leader Chelsea Kioko and the Kitui Township Assembly Ward Member Daniel Ngoima Kimanzi also addressed the function among others.
