In a surprising turn of events, Hopkin Digital reporter discovered that the leadership of the minority party in the Kitui County Assembly boycotted the Kitui Agricultural Show and Trade Fair 2024. The absence of the opposition figures raised eyebrows and sparked discussions among the attendees and political observers.
The event, which is a significant annual occurrence in the county, was nonetheless attended by Speaker Kevin Kinengo, the majority party leadership, and its nominated members.
The minority party, the National Rainbow Coalition–Kenya (NARC–Kenya), has been vocally opposing Governor Malombe’s development agenda.
The party, led by its leader and former Kitui governor Charity Ngilu, is represented in the county assembly by Alex Nganga, MCA for Miambani and leader of the minority party, Jeremiah Mutua, MCA for Nguni Ward and deputy leader of the minority party, Sylvester Kitheka, MCA for Matinyani and whip of the minority party, and Boniface Katumbi, MCA for Kyangwithya East and deputy whip of the minority party..
Speaking exclusively to our reporter, one of the boycotting leaders stated, “I can’t attend a function whose motive is to siphon money from the public.” He further added, “No, the show is an avenue for looting.” Their collective absence was conspicuous and hinted at potential political discord or strategic maneuvering within the county’s political landscape.
Despite the boycott, the show was a massive success, attracting over 150,000 participants. These attendees were eager to explore new climate-smart farming technologies and to exhibit their products.
The fair has traditionally been a platform for farmers, innovators, and businesses to network and share knowledge, and this year was no exception. The high turnout underscored the event’s importance to the community and the agricultural sector.
The absence of the minority party leadership did not overshadow the event’s achievements but did add a layer of political intrigue.
Hopkin Digital reporter recalled that since Governor Ngilu’s tenure, the show had been moribund, last held in 2017 during the first term of Governor Malombe. This is a clear indicator that Charity Ngilu never supported the Kitui show, and allegations suggest that the party leadership was instructed not to attend.
