Worshipers Accuse Kitui ACK Bishop Muneni of Suppression

1636

Worshipers in the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Diocese of Kitui are raising concerns over leadership wrangles, with many advocating for the diocese to be split into two: Kitui Diocese and Kitui Rural Diocese. Wakili Daniel Kyalo, a member of the church, is at the forefront of this push, accusing Bishop Gideon Muneni of restricting freedom of worship and expression within the diocese.

According to Kyalo, Bishop Muneni has issued circulars to all churches prohibiting any individual advocating for the diocese’s division from speaking in church, which he argues stifles debate and discussion.

Another worshiper shared frustrations about the leadership, stating that the Kitui Diocese is too large for the bishop to effectively manage. The bishop, they said, rarely reaches all the churches, leaving many feeling neglected.

This individual also criticized the addition of multiple services on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which has caused confusion among the church members. Furthermore, increased financial contributions imposed by the bishop have left many feeling overwhelmed.

Titus Kilonzo, Chairman of Finance at ACK St. John’s Kivumbuni, alleged discrimination against those who support the split. He claims he was recently removed from his position as Chairman of the Kitui Diocese’s KAMA (Kenya Anglican Men’s Association) simply because of his stance on the matter.

Similarly, Joyce Vata described a Sunday service on October 20th as highly irregular, with no songs, dancing, choir performances, or prayers. She attributed this to orders from the bishop instructing the presiding Reverend Kiteme to silence those advocating for the split.

These complaints reflect deepening divisions in the diocese, as members call for a more inclusive and transparent leadership style from Bishop Muneni. The demand for a split appears to be gaining momentum, driven by concerns about fair representation and effective administration within the large Kitui Diocese.
