National Liberal Party (NLP) leader Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli has lashed out at a section of Ukambani leaders for turning the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui into a partisan political affair. Speaking exclusively to HopkinDigital.com , Anzauni clan national patron Dr. Muli said the event, which was meant to celebrate national heroes, was instead hijacked by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) loyalists.

Dr. Muli accused the organizers led by Livestock Development Principal Secretary Jonathan Muekeof using taxpayers’ money to advance self-driven political campaigns under the guise of national celebrations. “What we witnessed at Ithookwe Stadium was disappointing. Almost everyone who filled that stadium was a UDA affiliate. Mashujaa Day is not for political parties it is a national celebration funded by taxpayers and should unite all Kenyans, not divide them,” he said.

He lamented that leaders from the region have become the biggest obstacle to unity and development, saying they prioritize political loyalty over service delivery. “The problem in Ukambani is not the people it’s the leaders. They have allowed external political interests to divide and weaken our voice as a region,” Dr. Muli stated.

Despite his criticism, Dr. Muli extended gratitude to President William Ruto for choosing Kitui as the host of this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, describing it as a great honor for the county and the entire Eastern region. “We sincerely thank the President for gracing Kitui. It was an opportunity for the world to see our beautiful county and its potential. However, such moments should not be misused for narrow political gains,” he added.
