Work in Progress on Ikutha–Kanziku–Mutha–Mutomo Road

Construction kicked off on the Ikutha–Kanziku–Mutha–Mutomo road, days after President William Ruto officially launched the project in Kitui South during his recent tour of the region. Heavy machinery and road crews are now on site undertaking the initial phases of the KSh 1.27 billion project.

The road, expected to open up the southern part of Kitui County, is among national investments fast-tracked by the government as part of a renewed push to accelerate infrastructure and revive previously stalled projects across the country.

Residents and leaders have welcomed the swift commencement, describing it as a long-awaited investment that will spur economic transformation.

Economists say the road will play a key role in empowering local communities by expanding market access and reducing transport costs for farmers, livestock traders, and small business owners. The improved network is also expected to unlock mining opportunities in Kitui South, a region rich in minerals such as limestone and iron ore, by reducing logistical challenges for investors and easing the movement of raw materials.

The road is further expected to attract new private enterprises, including agro-processing ventures, commercial centres, and service industries, which will create jobs and support small businesses. Local tourism is also likely to get a boost as improved access opens up cultural and natural sites that have remained largely inaccessible due to poor road conditions.

Residents say they now look forward to better access to schools, hospitals, and local markets once the road is complete, reducing travel time and enhancing social services.

The project marks one of the region’s most significant infrastructure undertakings, signaling what many locals describe as the beginning of economic renewal for Kitui South.
