The newly constructed Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui has ignited a spirited public debate, with leaders and residents offering competing proposals on what the facility should be named. The stadium, expected to become the region’s premier sports and events venue, has already taken on symbolic significance even before its official opening.
The debate intensified after political analyst Dr. Vincent Munyoki proposed that the stadium be renamed the Hon. Charity Ngilu Sports Centre in honour of former Kitui Governor Charity Kaluki Ngilu. Dr. Munyoki praised Ngilu’s decades-long career, describing her as a trailblazer who redefined Kitui’s political direction and became one of the first Kenyan women to seek the presidency in the 1990s. He argued that her contributions deserve lasting recognition as she gradually steps back from active politics.
Ngilu’s supporters say the gesture would not only celebrate her legacy but also ensure that future generations remember her role in elevating Kitui onto the national stage. Dr. Munyoki framed the proposal as part of a broader philosophy of leadership renewal, noting that honouring past leaders creates space for emerging voices and new ideas that can drive the county into its next chapter of growth.
However, the conversation extends beyond Kitui’s borders. Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has previously suggested that the stadium be named after Raila Amolo Odinga, citing the ODM leader’s national influence and his long political partnership with the Ukambani region. Kalonzo’s remarks injected a national political dimension into what had initially appeared to be a local naming debate.
