Miambani Ward MCA Alex Nganga has flagged off the 8th edition of the annual Nganga Cup, a popular grassroots football tournament that continues to draw massive youth participation from across the ward. This year’s launch was presided over by the Chief Officer for Youth and Sports, Nason Kang’alya, who commended the MCA for sustaining one of the most consistent community sports initiatives in Kitui County.

The tournament has attracted teams from six villages, featuring 31 boys’ teams and 6 girls’ teams, marking one of the highest turnouts since its inception. Speaking during the launch, the second serving MCA urged team captains and players to uphold discipline throughout the competition, noting that the event was designed not only to nurture talent but also to instill respect, teamwork, and sportsmanship among young people.

The county lawmaker further emphasized that the Nganga Cup plays a critical role in keeping young people meaningfully engaged during the festive season, a period often associated with increased risky behavior. He noted that the tournament is part of broader efforts to combat crime, drug abuse, and idleness among the youth by offering them a productive platform to showcase their abilities. The MCA also cautioned players against rough play to avoid injuries, urging them to compete fairly and responsibly.

The grand finale of this year’s tournament is scheduled for 27th December 2025, with hundreds of residents expected to gather for the highly anticipated closing matches. Organizers say preparations are in high gear, and the tournament promises fierce competition as teams battle for top honors in both the boys’ and girls’ categories.
