Kenya Railways Corporation on Monday commissioned the Railway Training Institute (RTI) Kitui Campus, marking a major milestone in the expansion of technical and professional training in Kitui South Constituency. The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior officials from Kenya Railways, led by Managing Director Mr. Philip J. Mainga, EBS, alongside a delegation from the Railway Training Institute.

Speaking at the event, Kitui South MP Hon. Kaki hailed the development as a transformational step for youth empowerment and local skills development. “The RTI Kitui Campus is not just a training institution; it is a gateway to opportunities for our young people. This initiative will equip them with the skills needed to compete in the transport, logistics, and engineering sectors,” he said.

The lawmaker announced that the first 50 students admitted to the campus will have their tuition fees fully covered through the Kitui South NG-CDF bursary programme. “We are committed to ensuring that no deserving student is left behind due to financial constraints. This bursary will open doors for many bright young minds in our constituency,” she added.

Mr. Mainga praised the constituency leadership for its visionary approach and the impressive infrastructure already in place to host the campus. He said the facilities meet the required standards and demonstrate strong collaboration between national institutions and grassroots leadership.

The Kenya Railways Managing Director assured residents that the corporation will fast-track the operationalisation of the campus, including staffing and rollout of training programmes, to ensure learning begins without delay. He reiterated Kenya Railways’ commitment to decentralising training institutions to bring opportunities closer to the people.

Once operational, the RTI Kitui Campus will become the fourth campus of the Railway Training Institute, joining existing campuses in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu. The campus is expected to offer technical and professional courses in railway operations, engineering, transport and logistics, positioning Kitui South as a growing hub for skills development and youth employment.
