Univision DT Sacco has announced a Special General Meeting (SGM) to be held tomorrow on 23rd August 2025 at Ithookwe Primary School, where members will deliberate on adopting a delegate system in line with directives from the Commissioner for Co-operative Development. The Commissioner had instructed all cooperatives with more than 5,000 members to amend their bylaws and introduce a delegate structure for representation.
According to proposals already floated, directors would be elected by members within their respective electoral zones, while one delegate would be chosen to represent every 100 members. Proponents of this model argue that it will ensure structured participation and make decision-making more efficient in a Sacco with thousands of members.
However, not all members are convinced. A section of the membership has raised concerns that the system could reduce accountability and provide loopholes for malpractice. “The delegate system will only perpetuate corruption and silence the voice of ordinary members. Power will end up concentrated in the hands of a few who can be easily compromised,” one member has told Hopkin Reporter.
The upcoming meeting is therefore expected to be tense, as members weigh between complying with government directives and safeguarding transparency and full member participation in the Sacco’s governance. The outcome will shape the future leadership structure of Univision DT Sacco for years to come.
