Kitui County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Youth and Sports Phoebe Mutemi, accompanied by Chief Officer for Youth and Sports Nason Kang’alya, on Saturday, December 13, joined her Machakos counterpart, CECM for CECM-Youth, Sports, Gender and Social Welfare Sharon Mutua, at the grand finale of the Governor Wavinya Cup held at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos. The high-profile event attracted hundreds of football fans and featured youth teams from across Machakos County, marking the climax of the popular inter-ward tournament.
Ms Mutemi lauded Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti for investing in youth-focused sporting programmes, noting that sports remain a powerful tool for nurturing talent, promoting discipline and steering young people away from social vices. She emphasised the need for county governments to prioritise sports development as a pathway for youth empowerment and broader socio-economic growth.
Speaking to our reporter in Machakos, the CECM said the engagement comes at a time when Kitui County, under Governor Dr Julius Malombe, is rolling out its own Governor Malombe Cup at the ward level. She noted that the initiative is aimed at grassroots talent identification and structured youth engagement across all wards, underscoring Kitui’s commitment to building a strong and sustainable pipeline of young sporting talent.
