The third phase of Former Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza’s water tanks donation initiative took place on Thursday at Tulia grounds in Kitui West, where local women groups benefited from the empowerment program. A total of 32 water tanks were issued to women groups, while an additional 138 tanks were distributed for hand-washing purposes, further promoting hygiene and sanitation in the community.

The donation forms part of Malonza’s broader Kila Nyumba Tangi initiative, which seeks to ensure that every household in Kitui County has access to a water storage facility. By encouraging rainwater harvesting, the programme aims to cushion families against perennial water shortages while boosting food security through kitchen gardening and small-scale irrigation.

Malonza emphasized that the tanks would not only ease the burden of fetching water from distant sources but also contribute to improved hygiene standards in homes, churches, schools, and public gatherings. She noted that better access to water plays a critical role in disease prevention, particularly through regular hand-washing and safe water use.

The former CS encouraged women to embrace teamwork by forming groups, explaining that organized groups stand a greater chance of benefiting from government funds and support from non-governmental organizations. She reaffirmed her commitment to empowering women, adding that unity and collective effort remain vital in unlocking social and economic opportunities for families across Kitui.
