Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, inspected the ongoing construction of the Ithookwe Stadium and the rehabilitation of the Ithookwe Airstrip in Kitui town, ahead of this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations scheduled for October 20. Kitui will host the national fete for the first time, and the government has embarked on a massive infrastructure upgrade to ensure the county is ready for the historic occasion.
The 10,000-seater Ithookwe Stadium, the signature project for the celebrations, is being constructed to international standards at a cost of Ksh 700 million. Currently 80 percent complete, the facility will serve not only as the venue for Mashujaa Day but also as a long-term hub for sports tournaments, cultural activities, and other public gatherings for Kitui residents.
DP Kindiki urged the contractor to complete the project on time without compromising on quality, emphasizing that the government is committed to delivering a lasting legacy in Kitui. He also toured the Ithookwe Airstrip, which is undergoing a Ksh 150 million rehabilitation to restore it to operational status, further boosting the county’s connectivity and capacity to host national and regional events.
In addition to the stadium and airstrip, Kitui town is benefiting from extensive improvements in roads, electricity, water supply, and other public works. These projects are expected to outlive the October celebrations, positioning Kitui as a modern hub in the Lower Eastern region while giving residents long-term social and economic benefits.
