Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe is committed to ensuring Kitui locals get quality healthcare at the village level, a vision that has begun taking shape with the opening and renovation of 15 dispensaries across six sub-counties.
The initiative, led by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation under CECM Ruth Koki and supported by Chief Officers Lynn Kitwan (Public Health and Sanitation), Dr. Benson Musyoka (Medical Services), and Aggrey Kamba (Drugs and Medical Supplies), is designed to bring essential health services closer to the people.
The facilities will now provide a wide range of critical services, including immunization, antenatal care, family planning, outpatient treatment, and health education. For many communities, this marks the first time such services are available within walking distance, greatly reducing the burden of travel and costs for families. It is a transformative step toward improved health outcomes, particularly for residents in remote and underserved villages.
The newly commissioned and renovated dispensaries are distributed across the county as follows:
Mwingi North – Kimela (Kimela/Syumani Village), Katumbi (Katumbi Village), Gatoroni (Gatoroni/Kanyangya Village).
Kitui West – Kilimu (Kilimu Village), Kyeng’e (Kyeng’e Village).
Kitui East – Kanguu (Kenze Village), Katumbi (Katumbi/Koi Village), Makuka (Makuka Village), Kasangu (Kasangu Village).
Kitui South – Ngwate (Ngwate Village), Isaa (Isaa Village), Kathungu (Kathungu Village).
Mwingi Central – Masavi (Masavi Village), Sosoma (Sosoma Village).
Kitui Rural – Kitooni (Kitooni Village).
Each dispensary has been well equipped and stocked with essential medicines in line with pharmacy guidelines, guaranteeing timely diagnosis and treatment. Staffing has also been carefully structured, with every facility assigned a trained nurse, supported by a casual worker and a watchman to ensure smooth operations, patient safety, and uninterrupted service delivery. This deliberate approach reflects the county’s effort to balance quality healthcare provision with sustainable use of resources.
The rollout of 15 dispensaries within a single week demonstrates Governor Malombe’s dedication to equitable health access and his broader agenda of universal health coverage. Importantly, this bold step directly aligns with Governor Malombe’s manifesto, which prioritizes strengthening primary healthcare, reducing inequalities, and ensuring that no village is left behind. The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has pledged that, in line with this vision, all the 247 villages in Kitui will have a health facility enabling every household to access healthcare within walking distance.
The commissioning exercise was carried out by a dedicated health team on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, ensuring that the facilities were ready to serve residents immediately. This milestone underscores Governor Malombe’s resolve to make healthcare not just a promise, but a reality at the village level, where it is needed most.
