After a week since Kitui Speaker Kevin Kinengo’s impeachment motion was received in the County Assembly of Kitui, the Speaker has decided to resign from the Wiper Democratic Movement–Patriotic Front National Executive Council (WDM-NEC).
In a resignation letter seen by Hopkin Digital dated 29th September 2025, Kinengo told the party’s Secretary General that his membership in the NEC created a conflict of interest with his constitutional role as Speaker of the County Assembly of Kitui. He argued that the office of the Speaker demands impartiality and neutrality in presiding over debates, while NEC membership required him to push party positions in ways that clashed with his official duties.
The Speaker also cited lack of support from his party in shielding him from impeachment threats. He noted that despite facing two impeachment motions brought by Wiper MCAs, the party never intervened, unlike in past cases where other leaders were defended. He added that Wiper even questioned his engagements with political leaders from other parties, including the President and Deputy President, yet as Speaker, he is mandated to accommodate all political voices.
Kinengo disclosed that the party had already sidelined him, going as far as removing him from the NEC WhatsApp group without reason. He said this was sufficient proof that his services were no longer required, further cementing his decision to resign. Nonetheless, he stressed that his resignation from the NEC does not affect his overall membership in the Wiper Party, which he intends to retain.
